Overview Edit

"Burning a Sinner" is the debut release by Witchfinder General, and was rerecorded as the sixth track of their first album, Death Penalty.

Writing Edit

Supposedly, the single was intended as an EP, featuring Burning a Sinner, Invisible Hate and Witchfinder General, which were "specially written" for the release.

Recording Edit

In the liner notes for Buried Amongst the Ruins, Phil Cope said "... [Burning a Sinner] cost the band a mixing desk and half our PA. We had to give Paul 1000 pounds ... for them just to release it."

Release Edit

The Burning a Sinner single sold 1000 copies in just under three weeks, necessitating the pressing of 3000 more copies to cope with demand. The single was played on some radio programs around the time of it's release. A year after it's release, it had sold around 4,500 copies.

Reception Edit

The single reached number 9 in a weekly music paper's heavy metal charts.

Burning a Sinner: Edit

A cart rolled through the town
And people all around
Gathered for the burning of the witch
They grit their teeth in anger
They raise their arms in fear
The burning stake was ready for that bitch
Singing burn her
Burn her
Burn her to the ground
Singing burn her sins
Burn her pride
Burn her till she dies
They tie her to the stake
People shout abuse
They want to hear the sizzling of her flesh
She looks at them and curses
Each one of them in town
The execution flame put to the ground
Singing burn her. . .
You cannot see her body
Smoke is all around
All you hear is the sizzling of her flesh
Fire burns so quickly
Smoke begins to clear
Preacher man stood up, pronounced her dead
Singing burn her
Singing burn her. . .

Satan's Children: Edit

Well there was a darkened grave at night
Yeah my thoughts are wild and out of sight
I heard a noise seep from the grave
Satan’s come for me, turn around
This human shape, with dog-like jaws
His skin was sick ‘n gray now
With bulging veins and burning sins
Could not stand them more now
To myself, “Oh what can I do?!”
The odd thing he replied now
“Can you not find me?”
Why did he lie to me?
Don`t you get away now
Satan said, “Now can you see?”
Come with me, my town’s free
Child of mine, you will be
Sex with girls, you know…
Go we….
This human shape, with dog-like jaws
His skin was sick ‘n gray now
With bulging veins and burning sins
Could not stand them more now
To myself, “Oh what can I do?!”
The odd thing he replied now
“Can you not find me?”
Why did he lie to me?
Don`t you get away now
Need some time
Satan you got mine
Fine to be
Child of he
Our fortune bright
Grieving wives
God is not here
Satan is near
Hands a rose
Saved from now
“Mercy!” he cried
But was it denied?
